Educational Institutions Offer Summer Camps and Other Opportunities to Learn

Summer has begun, which means most local schools, colleges, and other academic institutions are winding down their normal class schedules. In our area, we are fortunate to be home to several educational institutions offering a number of opportunities for those seeking educational opportunities during the summer months. Texas A&M University – Corpus Christi (TAMUCC) and Del Mar College both offer continuing education courses and summer camps in addition to their standard summer classes for students. The Texas State Aquarium also offers engaging camps and workshops. This week, I would like to share information about some of these programs to encourage both children and adults to use this summer as a time to learn a new skill, continue to grow academically and professionally, or pick up a new hobby.

Texas A&M University – Corpus Christi offers both online and classroom continuing education courses as well as educational camps for students in grades K-12. From fine arts to engineering, TAMUCC’s youth summer camps are designed to appeal to a variety of unique interests. For example, from June 4th to August 10th, TAMUCC is partnering with the Art Museum of South Texas to host a program called The Fine Art of Summer Camp. This program consists of ten different sessions, each designed to highlight a different pop culture theme and technique, such as cartooning/drawing, mine “craft”/collage, Jurassic art/printmaking and more. You can find more information at Texas A&M University – Corpus Christi summer youth programs.

The Community Outreach program at TAMUCC offers online courses for workforce training and continuing education across several fields and disciplines. Participants in this program are given the opportunity to take a number of courses geared towards career advancement, fulfillment of training requirements for licensed degrees, or simply to learn a new skill for fun or enrichment. TAMUCC also offers adult outdoors courses focused on birding, kayaking and fishing. For more information visit Texas A&M University – Corpus Christi Community Outreach.

Del Mar College also offers variety of different educational activities and camps geared towards children of all ages throughout the summer. Del Mar College’s Viking Kids Camp, for example, provides 3rd through 8th grade students the opportunity to gain new skills and continue to grow academically in a comfortable, educational environment. Other programs include music camps, youth aquatics lessons, and public safety academies. To find more details about these programs visit Del Mar College Youth Camps and Academies.

In addition to its children’s programs, Del Mar College also offers opportunities for adults seeking to enhance their skill sets or further their education through the Career & Community Education Department. Courses are offered in a number of different focus areas, including health care, workforce training, real estate, computer training, and education for seniors. Information on these camps visit Del Mar College Continuing Education.

The Texas State Aquarium, also a key educational institution in our area, offers Summer SeaCamp on a weekly basis for students in pre-kindergarten through 12th grade. These camps are designed with a focus on STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) educational techniques and give students the opportunity to observe, explore and discover more about marine life and science. For more information visit Texas State Aquarium’s SeaCamps.
