State Rep. Todd Hunter and Corpus Christi Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Foster Edwards on June 1 traveled to Galveston for the windstorm insurance conference, a gathering of local and state leaders from the 14 coastal counties.

Hunter said the purpose of the conference is to get the word out on the latest rate increase approved by the Texas Windstorm Insurance Association, the possibility of future rate increases and the importance of developing a strategy for the 83rd Legislative session, which starts in January.

The windstorm association provides wind and hail damage insurance to residential and commercial properties on the Texas coast, including in Nueces County. The association’s board has the power to increase rates, within certain limits, without legislative approval.

Opponents believe the association raises rates without considering the effect on coastal communities, many of which are among the poorest in the state.

“These conferences are necessary because they send a message to TWIA and other groups engaged in the windstorm issues that we are strong and unified, and I do believe it will have an impact,” Hunter said. “It also gives legislators strength and backing to go to Austin and come up with good laws.”

The next conference is slated for the fall. Information
