State Representative Todd Hunter Files for Reelection
In New Court-Ordered House District 32

Hunter also supports Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott’s US Supreme Court protest of the redistricting maps

Corpus Christi, Texas— State Representative Todd Hunter (R-Corpus Christi) formally filed this morning with the Republican Party of Texas for reelection in the court-ordered House District 32.

In the court ordered redistricting, District 32 loses San Patricio County and gains Victoria County. The district also retains all of Aransas and Calhoun Counties as well as the portion of Nueces County where Hunter lives.

Upon filing, Hunter added that he “feels awkward” because the Federal Court-ordered redistricting map places fellow Republican Geanie Morrison (R-Victoria) into House District 32. Under Texas House district boundaries for the past ten years, Morrison has represented District 30 (De Witt, Jackson, Lavaca, and Victoria Counties) but under the new federal court ordered redistricting, her former district is now split into three state house districts including District 32.

“The Federal Court ordered map takes Geanie out of her District 30 and puts her in my district (District 32),” said Hunter. “On behalf of Geanie’s former District 30 constituents and my former District 32 constituents, I filed objections with the Federal Court protesting how this Federal Court-ordered map violates state constitutional protections for our existing communities of interest.”

According to an analysis of the 2008 and 2010 elections, Hunter currently represents the larger voting turnout portion of the new District 32 compared to Morrison’s prior served area of Victoria County.  For example, in 2010, the voter turnout from Hunter’s prior served portion of the new District 32 was 20,756 voters compared to 19,463 voters from the overlap with Morrison’s prior district.

Hunter also added that he strongly supports Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott’s current efforts to have the current Federal Court-ordered redistricting maps stopped by the United States Supreme Court. Abbott’s appeal to the US Supreme Court was filed this past weekend.

“I hope the US Supreme Court restores the district boundaries drawn by the legislature and un-pairs Geanie and me,” said Hunter. “But if not, I will let democracy sort itself out by campaigning to represent my prior District 32 neighbors and my new Victoria County neighbors with the same commitment to conservative integrity and responsive service.”

Hunter, an attorney in Corpus Christi, currently serves as Chairman of the Texas House Calendars Committee. He and his wife, Alexis have been married 30 years and have three children. Credited as a key player in passage of the state’s reforms for affordable windstorm insurance and against lawsuit abuse, Hunter has also been an active advocate for local universities and community colleges. For his legislative service, Hunter has received numerous leadership awards including the James Madison Award presented by the Freedom of Information Foundation of Texas for his work on the “Free Flow of Information Act.”
