In this week’s article, I would like to draw attention to roadway safety which is an extremely important topic. Since November 7, 2000, at least one person has died every single day on Texas roads, with an average of eleven deaths every day. As a result, The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) has launched the annual #EndTheStreakTX campaign. During this campaign, TxDOT asks all Texans to join the effort to end the deadly 21-year streak on roadways in Texas. The Texas Transportation Commission has set a goal aiming to end all fatalities on Texas roads by 2050, with an interim goal to reduce them by half by 2035. I hope we can work together to end this deadly trend to make all roadways in Texas safe.
The leading cause of fatalities continue to be failure to stay in one lane, alcohol, and speed. November 7, 2000 was the last deathless day on Texas roadways. Since then, over 75,000 people have lost their lives due to vehicle crashes. In 2021, more than 3,200 people have been killed while on Texas roads. Along with this, approximately 1,413 people were in speeding related car accidents. These staggering statistics should serve as a reminder to drive safely and avoid distractions while driving.
Additionally, TxDOT has dedicated millions of dollars for safety improvements across Texas roadways. This includes widening some roads and adding rumble strips that alert drivers if they are veering out of their lane or off the road. Also, TxDOT will reinforce shoulders and select turn lanes, and deploy recent technology that will increase safety on the entire roadway system. However, Texans play a key role in ending the deadly trend by changing simple driving habits, such as wearing seatbelts, driving the speed limit, putting away the phone and other distractions, and never driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
