A New Legislative Year Begins Soon

Thank you for allowing me the privilege of once again serving the people of House District 32. I am proud to be a voice for the Coastal Bend and look forward to continuing that role during the 84th Texas Legislative Session.

During the 83rd Legislative Session, which was the legislative session in 2013, the Speaker of the House named me Chairman of the House Calendars Committee. This proved to be an important appointment for the Coastal Bend. Other committees that I had been appointed to in the last session included: County Affairs, General Investigating and Ethics, and Judiciary & Civil Jurisprudence. Additionally, I was appointed to co-chair the Joint Interim Committee to Study Water Desalination, and sat on the Human Trafficking interim committee.

Over the past year and a half, I have been proud to help organize a number of summits and conferences in and around the Coastal Bend. These meetings provided an important opportunity to look at key issues facing the state of Texas. These meetings covered such key issues as Water Desalination, Human Trafficking, Film Industry and the Video Game Industry. Hearing from individuals about these important subjects and from members of our District 32 community is a very important part of the overall legislative process. The information gathered from these meetings will be helpful in addressing the issues during the upcoming 2015 legislative session.

The 84th Legislative Session officially begins on January 13th, 2014. Members of the 84th Texas Legislature will be sworn-in on that day at noon. For those that can make it on January 13th, I would like to personally invite you to join us here in Austin for the opening day ceremonies. However, if you are unable to join us, I would still like to invite you to come to Austin sometime during the 84th session and visit the office. We want you to be a part of your Texas Legislature and the decisions that are made and the impact that it may have on your daily lives. Our office is located on the Ground Floor of the Texas Capitol building, at the room number GW. 18.

If you would like to follow the Texas House and learn more information on news, committees or other aspects of the legislative body, you can access its website at Texas House of Representatives. The site features live streaming from the House floor, committee hearings as well as access to a number of other resources. You can also follow the Texas Senate. The Texas Governor’s official website can be found at Office of the Texas Governor.

As a reminder, the 84th Texas Legislative session is fast approaching and we will be back in session in January of 2015. As always, I want to hear your ideas and suggestion. Your ideas and information are important forms of feedback and I hope that you will not hesitate to contact my office.

If you have questions regarding any of the information mentioned in this week’s article, please do not hesitate to call my Capitol or District Office. Please always feel free to contact my office if you have any questions or issues regarding a Texas state agency, or if you would like to contact my office regarding constituent services. As always, my offices are available at any time to assist with questions, concerns or comments (Capitol Office, 512-463-0672; District Office, 361-949-4603).
