Bill targets lawsuits filed to intimidate

AUSTIN — Texans who get sued after speaking out through the news media, blogs or other public forums would have the legal grounds to get a meritless case dismissed quickly under a proposal before the Legislature. Such a lawsuit, known as a “strategic lawsuit against public participation,” or SLAPP, could be dismissed with in an expedited court motion if the legislation is approved. A House committee heard testimony a few days earlier on the anti-SLAPP proposal by Rep. Todd Hunter, R-Corpus Christi, and has since sent it on to the full House of Representatives.{read more}
