U.S. 181 Harbor Bridge Replacement Project Breaks Ground
The Coastal Bend is celebrating the official groundbreaking of the U.S. 181 Harbor Bridge Replacement Project. The long-awaited Harbor Bridge project comes as a result of years of research and planning by local, state, and federal officials and community members in order to improve safety, connectivity, and service to our region. Set for completion by 2021, the new Harbor Bridge will be the longest precast cable stayed bridge in the United States. In this week’s article, I would like to share with you some key information about the plans for the new Harbor Bridge, including the history of the project and its significance to our area.
Once completed, the new bridge will serve as a replacement for the original Harbor Bridge, which was built over the course of three years beginning in 1956. Following its completion in 1959, the bridge’s iconic through arch design became one of the most recognizable landmarks in the area. Throughout the years, however, maintaining the Harbor Bridge has proved a difficult and costly endeavor. The bridge’s steel truss, for example, is highly susceptible to corrosion from the wind, heat, and saltwater of our coastal environment. Meanwhile, many of the World War II era safety and design standards used in the construction of the bridge are now considered outdated.
In 2003, a study conducted by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) concluded the current bridge would need to undergo major improvements to correct structural deficiencies and address serious safety concerns. In addition to these issues, research also showed that the current Harbor Bridge would need significant enhancements to improve connectivity to other roadways and meet growing traffic demands. With this in mind, local, state and federal officials and community stakeholders began evaluating the different options to best address these issues. As a result, the U.S. 181 Harbor Bridge Replacement Project plan was developed.
In developing the project, it was important that the plans met certain criteria such as ensuring traffic safety and long-term durability. The new bridge’s state of the art design will be executed using materials and technologies that will allow for a lifespan of 170 years. For example, the bridge will be constructed using concrete instead of steel in order to increase its resiliency to corrosion. As with the current Harbor Bridge, the new structure will also include six traffic lanes. However, unlike the current bridge, the roadway of the new bridge will also include both inside and outside shoulders, a center median, and a full-length pedestrian walkway. This addition will help protect driver safety as well as allow for increased traffic capacity during a hurricane evacuation.
One of the most important hallmarks of the new Harbor Bridge project is the increase in vertical clearance above the Corpus Christi Ship Channel. Currently, the Harbor Bridge has a vertical clearance of 138 feet, which limits the size of vessels that can pass underneath. Under the new project plans, this distance will be increased to 205 feet. This increase in navigational clearance will serve as an economic catalyst to the Coastal Bend economy by enabling larger cargo vessels to pass through the Corpus Christi Ship Channel to and from the Port of Corpus Christi.
The U.S. 181 Harbor Bridge Replacement Project is expected to take place over the course of five years, with a completion date set for April 2021. In addition to the new bridge, project plans also include the construction of a new interchange connecting the major roadways in the area as well as the reconstruction of portions of Interstate 37 and State Highway 286. Once the project is completed, the original Harbor Bridge will be demolished.
