Upcoming Events in the Coastal Bend
In this week’s article, I will focus on some up and coming cultural staples of South Texas. This includes the Buccaneer Days festival, the Corpus Christi ProRodeo, the Buc Days Carnival, the two Buc Days parades, Cinco de Mayo and upcoming plays at the Harbor Playhouse.
The Buccaneer Commission, a non-profit organization, has put on the Buc Days festival every year since 1938. The Commission is dedicated to bringing entertaining, educational and cultural events to the Coastal Bend. The proceeds from the events are given to local college students in the form of scholarships. Each event provides different experiences for the whole family so all can enjoy!
The Corpus Christi ProRodeo is one of the top 25 ProRodeos in the nation, held in the Coastal Bend’s very own American Bank Center. The Corpus Christi ProRodeo offers the chance to see top rodeo athletes perform at competitive levels with bareback riding, bull riding, and steer wrestling. Kids are also welcome to compete in the mutton bustin’ competition.
In addition to the ProRodeo, the festivities include the Buc Days & Stripes Carnival. To kick off the celebrations, Mayor Joe McComb will walk the plank of the Red Dragon Pirate Ship on May 2nd. From May 2nd to the 12th, the Buc Days & Stripes Carnival will include racing pigs, live music, pirate acts, and an amusement park for everyone to enjoy. With over 50 rides ranging from mild to extreme, there is plenty of fun to go around. To check on event schedules and general information go to bucdays.com
There are even more opportunities to see what the Coastal Bend community has to offer. Both the Buc Days Navy Army Night Parade and the IBC Bank Junior Parade are long-standing traditions of the Coastal Bend. The 82nd annual Navy Army Night Parade will feature elaborate floats, marching bands, and equestrian units along the over three-mile long parade route on May 4th at 8:00 pm. The IBC Bank Junior Parade features children’s groups on May 11th at 11:00 am. They are both wonderful opportunities to see local businesses, schools, and organizations represent themselves in elaborate floats. To get more information on either parade visit Buc Days Parade.
The fun continues in Port Aransas. Port Aransas is holding a Cinco de Mayo Mixer on May 2nd, from 4:30-6:30 p.m. at the Port Aransas Community Center. Drinks, food, music and other entertainment will be provided! For more information, check out Cinco de Mayo Mixer.
Finally, another exciting upcoming event in the Coastal Bend is the Harbor Playhouse’s presentation of the first of the summer play, Peter Pan. The well-known story will be performed from April 26th through June 2nd. Following the performance of Peter Pan, the Harbor Playhouse will debut its second summer play, Madness in Moonlight. Madness in Moonlight will be playing from June 14 through July 7. Auditions will be held April 29th and April 30th for the play. If you have any further questions, please visit Harbor Playhouse.
